Everything is a lie has welcomed this Monday one of its most outstanding signings of the season: Irene Montero. The former Minister of Equality and now MEP has made her debut as a collaborator, attracting all the attention by starring in a dialectical confrontation with the presenter, Risto Mejide, which has marked its entry in the format.
The clash of opinions has arisen almost immediately, when Mejide opened the program with a greeting full of ironyGood afternoon and welcome to everyone, everyone and ‘todes’.
The comment, loaded with intention, has provoked a quick reaction in Montero, who has not hesitated to answer him. “Can I tell you something?” she asked with determination. At the affirmative gesture of the driver, he has formulated his request: “I want you to commit yourself to say ‘todes’ every day that I come, but seriously. Next, no machirula joke. Those people that we speak with ‘todes’ really exist and, normally, what they receive is the incomprehension of the people, they are people who suffer a lot”.
However, Mejide has rejected her suggestion: “I am more of the RAE and the RAE already says that ‘todos’ includes all, ‘todes’ and all the ‘todos’ that we say”. But Montero, far from giving up, has insisted with a reflection about the importance of making certain collectives visible through inclusive languageI know, but what is not named does not exist, and there are people you make happy, knowing that you know they exist. It is a human argument […] If you say ‘todes’, maybe the RAE will change its criteria faster”.
Far from giving in, Mejide has maintained his immovable position. “When I change my criteria, I promise you that, then, I will say it. Until then, I will say ‘everyone’ because it includes everyone”. Despite the disagreement, the television concluded the discussion with a conciliatory tone. “I’m glad you said that because you come here to say whatever you want. Here feel free, we all say what we want and that’s the grace of this program. Everyone, without imposing anything on anyone, can say whatever they want,” he said.
