The outstanding Aragonese ephemeris of the day recalls that today, November 4, 1900, the outstanding entomologist from Zaragoza, Carlos Maynar Duplá, was born into an Aragonese family. Since his childhood, his mother was his greatest support in his great hobby: the study of insects. He completed his primary studies at the Jesuit school in the Aragonese capital and later enrolled at the University to study. industrial engineering, a profession he pursued until his retirement. During his military service in Larache, in the former Spanish Protectorate in Morocco, and due to his work, he had to live in Galicia and Catalonia before returning definitively to his hometown.
From an early age, Maynar was a disciple of Father Longinos Navás, a renowned Spanish entomologist, who was his teacher at school. He developed a methodical and persevering approach to the study of beetles, coinciding in his classes and entomological excursions with the famous filmmaker Luis Buñuel. Throughout his life, he became friends with outstanding Spanish entomologists. such as Cándido Bolívar, Francesc Español y Coll, Anselmo Pardo Alcaide, Asensio Codina and José María Mas de Xaxars, among others.
Maynar Duplá was one of the founding members of the European Coleopterological Association in Barcelona and one of the promoters of the Entomological Group of Zaragoza, which was the embryo of the Aragonese Entomological Society. He collaborated with renowned entomologists in Spain and France, facilitating the study of the material in his collection and providing valuable field data and observations, although he did not publish any papers. His valuable entomological collection, based mainly on material collected in Aragon, was inherited and expanded by his nephew Juan Ramon Dupláand is currently preserved in the Sociedad Entomológica Aragonesa, being fundamental for the study of the Aragonese fauna.
