The exhibition “Women in Japan” of the DPZ exceeds 20,000 visitors in its first month open to the public.

The exhibition “Women in Japan. Four centuries of ukiyo-e and shin-hanga.” of the Diputación de Zaragoza has exceeded 20,000 visitors in its first month at the Sástago Palace.. The exhibition, which opened its doors on October 3, brings the best Japanese engravings to the public for the first time through works from the prestigious Pasamar-Onila collection. This exhibition can be seen until December 29.

This is a unique opportunity to get to know the art of the land of the rising sun and to discover its most characteristic styles and genres, such as the ukiyo-e (a style that dates back to the 17th century), the shin- hanga (which in the twentieth century revitalized the ukiyo-e genre) or the shungaa genre dedicated to sex and eroticism.

The exhibition offers 146 Japanese prints from the 17th to the mid-20th century.; six illustrated books of the 18th century and 19th centuries; and other pieces from the 19th century, as a magazine and an illustrated scroll from the same period.. The Pasamar-Onila collection is composed of a thousand Japanese engravings, of which a great diversity of bijinga prints, a Japanese artistic genre that reflects “beautiful women”, can be seen in the palace of Sástago. Among the authors of the works are artists such as Eisen, Yoshitoshi, Utamaro, Hokusai (author of the famous wave next to Mount Fuji), or Hiroshigerepresentatives of the best of Japanese art.

ORIGINS, INFLUENCE IN EUROPE AND BEAUTIES

RENAISSANCE IN THE 20TH CENTURY, SEX AND EROTICISM.

The last part of “Women in Japan” is exhibited in the Room I and focuses on printmaking in the Meiji period. (since 1868). The tour continues in Room II, focusing on the twentieth century with works that reflect the renaissance of Japanese printmaking between the early twentieth century and after World War II with special emphasis on women artists.
