The heavy rainfall has caused incidents in a dozen municipalities of the Axarquíaone of the nine regions of the province of Malaga. The damages in Comares and Benamargosa stand out, where the excess of water has overflowed the diversion dam of the Cueva or Mazmúllar river.
The flooding of the Cueva river has caused considerable material damage. and several districts have been cut off from communication, without electricity or water.
The mayor of Comares, José Miguel Ruiz Padilla, has confirmed that there are no fatalities, although the water overflowing from the river is flooding Benamargosa.
Further downstream there is another diversion dam, that of the Solano river, which is diverted to the La Viñuela dam, this one has also reached a high level, the official explained.
Shortly before the river overflowed, the Minister of Presidency and Interior, Antonio Sanz, already acknowledged that the most worrying situation was being experienced in Benamargosa “with the situation of the riverbed and the situation of the houses that are close to the riverbed”.
The heavy rains have also caused the overflowing of the Velez River at its mouth.This has forced the evacuation of two campsites, where 600 and 300 people were living, respectively.
In addition, about 100 people have been evacuated from the shanty town of Torre del Mar, known as Las Casillas. Also, the areas near the river have been completely flooded.
