Official death toll from the DANA reaches 214 people and 41 still missing

The facilities of the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) of the City of Justice of Valencia have registered the entry of 214 fatalities due to the DANA and flooding in the province of Valencia since this episode occurred on October 29, 2024. Meanwhile, the number of missing persons has dropped to 41.

This is reflected in the balance sheet with the accumulated history of the Data Integration Center (CID) closed at 20 hours this Saturday, November 9, 2024. Of this total of deceased persons, all have been autopsied and 195 have been fully identified (157 by fingerprints, 35 by DNA and 3 by hospital identification during their lifetime). In the meantime, 19 bodies remain unidentified.

The ante-mortem offices set up by the National Police and the Civil Guard in collaboration with forensic doctors, currently have 41 active files for missing persons reports, which implies a decrease of nine cases compared to the previous day’s balance, due to the increase in identifications among the deceased and the location of persons alive.

As indicated by the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV) in a statement, both parameters, the active disappearances and the total number of fatalities, are different, so that “should not be added in any case”.

In this way, the high Court has specified that the active files of disappearance “may increase or decrease depending on the new identifications that may occur among the existing deceased, the increase in missing persons reports, or the location of living persons”.

The files ante mortem of missing persons that are active correspond exclusively to reports where the relatives have provided different data and biological samples together with the reports in the offices. ante mortem that allow the subsequent identification of their loved ones.

Thus, compared to the balance sheet closed 24 hours earlier, i.e. this Friday, November 8, there are two new fatalities accounted for, 12 new identifications of deceased personsthree more autopsies and nine fewer active missing persons files.

On the other hand, the morgue set up at Fira Valenciawhere all the corpses are sent from the City of Justice once the autopsy has been performed, have already made until 20 hours this Friday the effective delivery of 140 of the mortal remains of those deceased persons already identified to their families so that they can carry out the funeral rites, 12 more than the total number registered until this Friday.
