Doctor Strange 2 Dominates Mother’s Day Weekend

In news that will surprise no one, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness leaped to the top of the Mother’s Day domestic box office with $185 million per Disney. In short: there’s simply no stopping this Marvel train, which continues to produce massive hits. Strange‘s total is second only to Spider-Man: No Way Home’s $260 million opening in terms of COVID-19 era releases.

Globally, the Sam Raimi-directed comic book thriller accrued $265M for an astonishing $450M global tally in Week 1. With no upcoming enormous release skewed toward younger audiences on the horizon, it’ll be interesting to see how far Strange flies by the time Jurassic World stomps into theaters on June 10.

On Imax, Strange managed $18 million, which comes to $44K per theater and the biggest for the platform in the U.S./Canada in May, and sixth-best overall.
