The outstanding Aragonese ephemeris of the day recalls that today, November 10, but in 1913, José Manuel Blecua Teijeiro was born in Alcolea de Cinca, Huesca. Blecua, a Spanish philologist, professor of Spanish Literature at the University of Barcelona, and honorary member of the Royal Spanish Academy, He studied high school at the Santo Tomás de Aquino school in Zaragoza, where he was directed by Miguel Labordeta. At the University of Zaragoza, he studied Law and Philosophy and Letters at the same time and graduated in both with an extraordinary prize.
After working as a high school teacher, Blecua took up the Chair of History of Spanish Language and Literature at the University of Barcelona in 1959. In 1993, he was awarded the VII Menéndez Pelayo International Prize. Also, was noted for his specialization in poetry and literature of the Golden Age, publishing numerous books, and producing a monumental critical edition of the Poetry of Francisco de Quevedo. He also carried out an Anthology of Spanish Renaissance Poetry.
Blecua’s influence extended to Zaragoza, where he an institute bearing his name was built in the neighborhood of La Paz.
